When you step out of your daily routine, take a moment to breathe and reconnect your body, mind and soul. You’re able to adjust your priorities, be inspired and sometimes your untapped potential surprises you. Whether it’s exploring a foreign country, immersing yourself in a different culture, connecting with new people, rediscovering a mountain path in your home town or finally doing a headstand in your yoga practice – wherever your intuition guides you, run with it.
It’s something that I’ve always known but recently, after returning from an incredible trip to Bali; I’ve remembered how traveling to a new place or experiencing a completely new adventure gives you a fresh perspective and re-inspires you.

A colleague, Sam, dropped a friend off at the airport last Saturday morning and his mate said to him, “Why don’t you just come with? It’s going to be really fun.” In that spontaneous moment, Sam realised that he hadn’t experienced Durban before and what better time than right then and there to change that. So with a camera around his neck, his wallet in his pocket and the clothes on his back; he booked the last ticket on the flight to Durban and had the most epic weekend ever.
Since his returned to the office, you can see that he has a new lease on life. He’s glowing and is re-inspired – and so is his photography. After commenting on his great photos on Facebook, we had a conversation across our desk cubicles yesterday morning about how we, as creatives, need to explore and keep things fresh in order to keep our creative juices flowing. When you spend the majority of your time at an office desk distracted by your inbox, looming deadlines and social media news feeds; the analogy of drawing blood from a stone is so true. You only have a certain amount of creative juice to squeeze out of your imagination.
Like a desert in need of rain, our thirst for fresh ideas and new ways of thinking needs to be regularly hydrated – not just with water but with new and interesting flavours. And it’s those ‘Aha’ moments when you experience something so different from your daily norm that helps to mould your next brilliant idea. It also sparks your spirit and literally makes your eyes glow.
You need to follow your sunshine regardless of what logic and reason says. Work stresses, office politics, adult responsibilities and expectations get in the way; they dull and blur your vibe. Don’t allow that. If you put an intention out there and believe it’s possible, you can make it happen. For example, I never thought I’d find a perfect heart-shaped pebble on a beach but by following my true north, life surprised me and I found one on Balangan Beach in Bali.
Thank you Bali for the reminder to always follow your sunshine, everyday. You never know what you’ll discover along the way.
So it’s time to get back to my bucket list – I have two personal passion projects in the mix – one is an epic adventure with a good cause and the other is something I’ve always wanted to do, something that everything in my life up until now has prepared me for. All I have to do is take a leap of faith and go for it because if not now, when?
